‘The Families Stone’ Reunites the Original Holiday Cast

The Stone family is heading home for another Christmas. Searchlight Pictures has officially announced The Families Stone, a sequel to the 2005 holiday dramedy that will reunite most of the original ensemble two decades after the first film.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson and Luke Wilson are all confirmed to return. Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider and Brian White will also reprise their roles, restoring the sprawling family dynamic that made the original movie a seasonal favorite.

The Families Stone finds a new Christmas complication

The official setup moves the story forward 20 years after the death of family matriarch Sybil Stone. This time, the siblings reunite for Christmas and discover that their father, Kelly, has invited the woman he has fallen in love with to meet them. The premise promises another holiday gathering shaped by surprise, grief and romantic upheaval.

Diane Keaton, who played Sybil, died in October 2025 and will not appear in the sequel. Writer-director Tom Bezucha previously described the loss as deeply personal while he was developing the new story. The time jump allows the film to acknowledge both the character’s absence and the years that have passed for the family.

Bezucha, who wrote and directed The Family Stone, is returning in both roles. Original producer Michael London is also back, producing with Shannon Gaulding for Groundswell Productions. Parker and Alison Benson are producing through Pretty Matches Productions.

The 2005 film followed Parker’s tightly wound Meredith as she joined her boyfriend Everett’s bohemian New England family for Christmas. The visit quickly unraveled into clashing personalities, shifting attractions and a painful revelation about Sybil’s health. Its balance of sharp comedy and melancholy helped it endure beyond its initial theatrical run.

Production on The Families Stone is scheduled to begin in New York this fall. Searchlight has not yet announced a release date, leaving the reunion’s arrival as the next major detail for holiday-movie fans to watch.
